2023년 2학기 국민대학교 금속공예학과 교환학생 Charlie Gelhausen 인터뷰
다음은 전산팀 박민지 학생이 2023년 2학기 캔자스주립대학교에서 교환학생제도로 국민대학교에 오게 된 교환학생 Charlie Gelhausen 학생을 인터뷰한 내용입니다.
- 한국으로 교환학생 오는 것을 결심하게 된 계기가 있나요?
Before I came here, I was actually thinking of taking a semester off of school. Because I was very burnt out. I’d been working really hard, really fast for a very long time, and I was just getting tired and depressed and all these things. And so I spoke to my teachers about it, and instead of that, they recommended that I study abroad to get a new change of pace and a new environment, meet new people, kind of just have a new experience in general.
여기 오기 전, 저는 사실 휴학할 생각을 하고 있었습니다. 오랫동안 굉장히 열심히, 그리고 빠르게 작업을 하고 있었고, 이러한 것들에 지치고 우울해지기 시작해 번 아웃 상태였기 때문입니다. 저는 교수님들께 제 상황에 대해 말씀드렸고, 휴학 대신에 교환학생 제도를 추천해주셨습니다. 작업속도의 변화와 새로운 환경, 새로운 사람들을 만나는 것과 같은 새로운 경험을 하기 위해서요.
- 국민대학교에 지원한 이유가 무엇이었나요?
Kookmin is the university that my home university partners with. So it was technically the only option, but very, very happy and grateful that I got to come here.
국민대학교는 제가 재학 중인 대학교와 협력을 맺은 학교입니다. 그렇기에 유일한 선택지이기도 했지만, 여기에 오게 되어 매우 행복하고 감사한 마음입니다.
- 캔자스 대학교와 국민대학교의 수업 과정에 어떤 차이가 있나요?
So this is something I’ve noticed. Actually University of Kansas, it focuses a lot on idea making and the story behind the piece you make. And here there’s a lot of focus on technical ability and functionality. And so at University of Kansas, you can make kind of it’s a fine piece, maybe even bad looking, but as long as it has a really strong story and meaning behind it, the teachers will give you an A. And then there’s a focus on craft here, more than art. And that was kind of shocking to me. Like just cultural wise. I wasn’t used to that. But it’s really interesting. I’m able to hone my technical abilities here because I was one of those people who usually had a really strong meaning behind.
캔자스 대학교에서는 아이디어 제작 과정과 작품 이면의 이야기를 중시합니다. 그래서 캔자스 대학에서는 외관상 좋지 못해도 강한 이야기와 의미가 작품에 있다면, 교수님들은 학생들에게 좋은 점수를 줍니다. 그리고 여기(국민대학교)는 기술적인 능력과 기능성에 집중합니다. 예술보다는 공예에 초점을 두는데, 이것은 문화적인 면에서 저에게 매우 놀라운 점이었습니다. 저는 그것에 익숙하지 않았기 때문이죠. 하지만 매우 인상적이었습니다. 저는 주로 작품 이면의 의미를 중시하던 사람 중 한 명이었기에, 이곳에서 저의 기술적인 능력들을 발전시킬 수 있었습니다.
- 국민대학교의 수업 과정 중 좋았던 점이 있었나요?
I really like the culture of sharing and borrowing. It feels very communal.
저는 빌리고 나눠주는 문화가 좋았습니다. 공동체적인 느낌이 들거든요.
- 국민대학교의 수업 과정 중 아쉬웠던 점은 있었나요?
Never regrets. But it’s been definitely difficult, people don’t really talk to me. My friend Subin said everyone is very shy as well.
아쉬운 점은 없습니다. 다만 사람들이 저에게 말을 걸지 않아서 힘든 점은 있습니다. 제 친구 수빈이 말하기를, 다들 많이 수줍은 성격이라고 합니다.
- 최근 어떤 작업을 하고 있나요? 주제가 있다면 어떤 주제로 진행하고 있나요?
In raising we’re making milk jug, And in my metal technique class we’re making spheres and cones. I’m making a mouthpiece, There is a curved piece of thick wire that goes into your mouth and then there’s going to be spheres and cones coming up here.
레이징 수업에서는 밀크 저그를 만들고 있고, 기초 금속공예 응용 수업에서는 구와 원뿔 만들기를 하고 있습니다. 저는 마우스피스를 만들고 있는데, 휘어진 굵은 와이어어가 입에 들어가고, 그 위에 원뿔과 구가 올라가는 구조입니다.
- 언어적인 어려움이 있었던 적이 있나요?
It’s very difficult during lectures when the professor says a ton of stuff and then to me, they’re like “Did you get any of that?”. And I have to be like, “no, none of it”. And then someone just write down a few sentences for me. And so I feel like I’m falling behind pretty quickly, because I can only look, but I don’t hear.
강의에서 교수님께서 많은 것들을 말씀하시고는, 저에게 이해했냐고 물을 때 어려움을 겪곤 합니다. 저는 “아니요, 아무것도요.”라고 대답하곤 하죠. 주변에서 저를 위해 몇 가지 문장들을 적어주긴 하지만, 저는 매우 뒤처지는 기분이 듭니다. 왜냐하면 저는 듣지 못하고, 오직 보는 것을 통해서만 이해해야 하기 때문입니다.
- 한국에서 먹었던 음식 중에 마음에 들었던 음식이 있나요?
Definitely bibimbap. I love bibimbap. Sometimes I go to get Korean food in Chicago, and they’re like grocery stores, and they’re huge, and they have like Korean food like just kind of a small restaurant of the grocery store. But it’s way better here because it’s actually authentic.
확실히 비빔밥입니다. 저는 비빔밥을 사랑합니다. 시카고에 있었을 때, 식료품점 내의 작은 식당에서 가끔 한국 음식들을 먹곤 했습니다. 하지만 그것보다는 여기 음식이 진짜 전통이기에 훨씬 좋습니다.
- 앞으로의 교환학생 생활에서 기대하는 점이 있나요?
I expect to learn a lot, become really independent, and meet people from across the world. I was talking to people from home and they were like, ‘Is your motivation to be the best or to learn the most?’ And I was like, ‘Okay that’s really good.’, because for a while it was like, I have to prove that I’m here for a reason, I have to prove that I’m really good and that I deserve to be here. But really, I should just focus on learning as much as I can.
저는 많은 것을 배우고, 독립심을 기르기를 기대하고 있습니다. 세계 각국의 사람들을 만나고 싶기도 해요. 예전에 가족들이 저에게 ‘너의 동기가 최고가 되는 것이니, 아니면 많은 것을 배우는 것이니?’라고 질문한 적이 있습니다. 그리고 저는 그 말에 요지가 있다고 생각했습니다. 왜냐하면 저는 한동안 제가 대학교에 온 것에는 이유가 있고, 학교에 있을 자격이 있다는 걸 스스로 증명해야 할 것 같았기 때문입니다. 하지만 사실은, 제가 할 수 있는 한 배우는 것에 집중해야 한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
